VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal)
VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) is, by design, a small satellite earth station used for reliable transmission of data, video or voice via satellite. VSAT network is communication service using satellite access media with IP/Web Based, Broadband and DVB technology. A VSAT network using topology of star and mesh; and consists of a central HUB (master earth station) and several remote VSATs and satellite transponder space segments serving as radio frequency repeaters.
The entire VSAT network is monitored and controlled by a Network Management System, which is located at the HUB Network Operations Center.
VSAT has two segments within the network transmission process. These are the earth segment, which consists of all the ground-based satellite hardware, including both the central HUB station and individual VSATs, and the space segment, which is the connection between the satellite and the earth.
There are two units of VSAT hardware an outdoor unit and indoor unit. The outdoor unit is a mounted parabolic antenna and has associated electronics for signal reception and transmission. The indoor unit is a small desktop box containing receiver and transmitter boards and an interface to the user's equipment.
A telecommunications solution using VSAT ensures reliability with minimum distortion and disturbances, compared to other networks like microwave or cable. The short time to deployment gives VSAT yet another prime advantage. VSAT also has advantages over most other systems of telecommunication, such as single manageable networks, compatible adoption traffic feature of services, capability in data broadcasting, simple maintenance can be installed at any location and will meet a diverse range and combination of application needs, etc. The capacity and applications that can be supported by any particular VSAT system depend on its power, dish, satellite access system and type of user interface. VSAT technology offers the flexibility of adding additional services to the data portion of the network. These include video, audio, and voice transmission devices. The equipment and software used for transferring data among distant computers is rapidly becoming the most significant advance in technology along with remote management through a VSAT network. The ultimate advantage is the high availability and excellent transmission quality a VSAT network delivers to its users. The VSAT network also guarantees the highest performance levels among all communications alternatives.
